My daughter was visiting from Colorado over the holiday and we had planned on a Winter Birding trip to Plum Island in hopes of seeing the Snowy Owl. But we had not planned on the weather conditions being so extremely cold. Sure we had planned on cold weather but we woke to a temperature of -5 and the temperatures for the day topped off at 4. Looked like it was going to be a "car Birding" day.

I had been checking out the reports and the Owl was still being seen in the same area just near the road, so we were hopeful to get a sighting. We bundled up, loaded the truck and headed to Parker River National Wildlife Refuge on Plum Island. Unfortunately the weather only got worse, when we arrived the wind had picked up and it was snowing lightly. Brrrrrrrr.

I received a really nice new camera set-up from my husband and was anxious to try it out to get some closeup pictures of the birds. I threw the truck into four wheel drive and we slowly drove along the snowy Refuge road in search of birds. Well we never did see the Snowy Owl, we talked with other birders we came across and no one had spotted the Owl. Oh well that's just how it goes in Birding.

We did see large flocks of American Robins feasting on the Winter Berries that grow on the island. Also saw some Cedar Waxwings and Starlings, got a few pictures of the birds as they enjoyed the bountiful berries. There were plenty of Dark-eyed Juncos flitting about. We didn't get to see the Snowy Owl but it didn't matter, we had a nice morning spending time Birding together. That's what it's all about, spending time together doing some Winter Brrrrrrr.....ding!

Happy New Year everyone.
