This weekend is the Great Backyard Bird Count sponsored by the Audubon Society and the Cornell Lab of Ornithology and others, when they ask people to submit sightings of the birds they see in their backyards. I have been taking part in the annual count for many years and it is very interesting to see the results when they post them.
This year I saw 10 different species in my backyard, nothing all that exciting. I've seen more in previous years. This year I saw American Crows, Mourning Doves, Blue Jays, Northern Cardinals, Hairy Woodpeckers, Downy Woodpeckers, Dark-eyed Juncos, American Goldfinches, Tufted Titmouse, and Black-capped Chickadees.
But what was exciting was to see that the Chickadees were back! I haven't had them visiting my feeders much at all this Winter, not sure why but it sure was nice to see them back. There was a small flock of 5 busy flying back and forth to the feeders enjoying the sunflower seeds. It made me smile to hear their familiar Chicka...dee... dee ...dee call, I'd missed hearing them. So glad they are back.
So what birds did some of you see out there?
